Following the critically acclaimed Stateless and developing a reputation for mesmerising improvised live performances (including an appearance at this year’s WOMADELAIDE festival), Australian “post-everything” group Tangents come full circle with the single release for Maze Crescent this July on Brooklyn-based label Temporary Residence.

A two part epic that completes the sonic journey that is Stateless, Maze Crescent is a kaleidoscopic trip through the aural senses, restless in its rhythmic impulses but anchored by a propulsive bassline and acoustic piano wash, before being set adrift to float and revolve around delicate cello and wandering guitar, all tempered by fizzling glitches and electronics from start to finish.

The single is backed with reworks from Sydney’s experimental pop wunderkind Marcus Whale (BV, Collarbones) and Melbourne based dancefloor-meets-deep listening pioneer Kane Ikin (12k, Type) - a post-apocalyptic industrial blast through Part I and a narcotic reimagining of Part II, respectively. Also created especially for this release is a shimmering visual piece by Australian video artist Scott Morrison (Room40) that reflects on precise movement within natural elements, setting flashes of forest and waterscapes against the intricate textures of the music.

Maze Crescent anticipates the group’s upcoming album on Temporary Residence (to be released early 2018) and will be launched on July 22nd in Sydney, Australia as part of Unashamedly Original, a festival of multidisciplinary experiences that push the envelope of sight and sound.

Mogwai, best band ever, known them since young team times and impressed with every album so far. Seen them 3(?) times live in 3 different countries and missed them in pukkelpop in 1998. This set gives me the chills and reminds me of the gig at the Sse hydro in Glasgow. Don’t believe the Fife, Helicon 1 , Rano pano and Every country’s sun are my favourites. Mogwai gave a new meaning to loud, this goes through your spine and makes you smile (with pain later). jsheaven
